GreenFinder Supports Malaysia's First Digital STRAITREP Reporting Initiative in the Strait of Malacca

GreenFinder Supports Malaysia's First Digital STRAITREP Reporting Initiative in the Strait of Malacca

Port Klang, Malaysia – GreenFinder Sdn Bhd is proud to support the digital transformation of maritime traffic management through the development of the electronic ship reporting platform used during the trial implementation of Malaysia's Automatic Electronic Ship Reporting System (STRAITREP) at Klang Vessel Traffic Service (Klang VTS).

The initiative was announced through Peninsular Notice to Mariners NTM 77(T) / 2026, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of vessel traffic reporting within one of the world's busiest shipping corridors, the Strait of Malacca.
The Mandatory Ship Reporting System (STRAITREP) has been in operation since 1 December 1998, relying primarily on manual reporting procedures via designated VHF radio channels. The introduction of the automatic electronic reporting system represents a major advancement in maritime safety, operational efficiency, and digital governance, aligned with the requirements of IMO Resolution MSC.433(98).
As part of the trial phase conducted at Klang VTS, vessel operators are now able to submit mandatory ship reports electronically through a secure online platform developed by GreenFinder. The system complements existing reporting procedures while providing a modern digital channel that improves reporting accuracy, efficiency, and traceability.

The platform incorporates several key capabilities, including:
  • Automatic vessel identification through real-time AIS data
  • Digital submission of ship reports through a secure web portal
  • Electronic reporting templates for standardized submissions
  • Improved monitoring and tracking of vessel reporting compliance
  • Enhanced support for vessel traffic management operations
Under the trial implementation, vessel operators are required to submit reports electronically within 24 hours prior to entering designated STRAITREP reporting sectors in the Strait of Malacca.
GreenFinder's involvement in this initiative reflects its continued commitment to advancing Malaysia's maritime digital ecosystem through innovative solutions that enhance navigation safety, maritime domain awareness, and regulatory compliance.
The project also demonstrates how emerging maritime technologies can support government agencies in modernizing legacy operational processes while maintaining alignment with international maritime standards and best practices.
As one of the world's most strategically important waterways, the Strait of Malacca handles thousands of vessel transits annually. The successful adoption of digital reporting technologies is expected to improve operational efficiency, strengthen maritime safety oversight, and support the future evolution of vessel traffic management services in Malaysian waters.
